No historical information can be found regarding the salok of Guru Amardas Sahib. Pandit Tara Singh Narotam associates the revelation of ‘Mundavani Mahala 5’ with Guru Arjan Sahib’s wedding. According to him, Guru Arjan Sahib’s marriage to Mata Ganga Ji took place in 1579 CE. Mata Ganga Ji’s father, Bhai Krishan Chand, was a resident of the village Mau (Jalandhar, Panjab). When the wedding procession arrived at the bride’s home, the women from the bride’s family tied up the wedding procession with a ‘mundāvaṇī’ (a riddle).
Bani Footnote Symbolically ‘tying the wedding procession with a riddle’ means to keep the dishes sealed until the riddle is solved.
Guru Arjan Sahib recited this composition to remove this tie. Later, during the compilation of the Guru Granth Sahib, this composition was included by Guru Arjan Sahib as a seal or mark of authenticity.
