No information is found regarding the time and place of the revelation of this composition. However, traditional scholars have written of a brief prologue on the background of this Sabad.

According to Sant Kirpal Singh, once the Sikhs had made a plea before Guru Arjan Sahib: “How can the day and night be made fruitful?” The Guru recited this Sabad with the title ‘din raiṇi’ (day and night) and imparted the teaching of remembering IkOankar.

Similarly, Sant Hari Singh ‘Randhawe Wale’ has also stated that this Sabad had been recited upon the plea of the Sikhs.

From the prologue above, it can be said that this is the method of interpreting Bani, which is commonly found in commentaries by the traditional schools. Bani is explained as a narrative according to this interpretive method, where there is a speaker and a listener.
